Stay Salty!

“You are the salt of the earth.
But if the salt loses its saltiness,
how can it be made salty again?”
Matthew 5:13

At one point I attended an IT boot camp style course certification class for nine weeks. One of the first things I did to introduce myself to the class was to let everyone know, I love Jesus. Three weeks later, we entered the CompTIA Security+ portion of class. Like all classes I have attended in the past, there are times when someone speaks up to deliver a callous anecdote about someone. In this case, a fellow student had fell asleep, snoring in the back row behind me. As we were a class full of Veterans, the young man woke up to some impressive jeering. Now the instructor was coherently kind and he liked to jab in with his own brand of wit.

A fellow Vet in the class spoke up and said, “Teach, you should throw something at the guy next time he falls asleep!”

“O, I can’t throw.” The teacher replied, “If I were to try to throw at the guy in the back, I would end up hitting Brian and I don’t want to mess with Brian. He looks like he would hurt me.”

In the moment my instructor said that, I felt a pause. My first thought was, “What did he just say?” then “Why me?!”

I didn’t get a chance to ponder and think about these two questions for long as I quickly read the room, most eyes were on me. How did it get so intense, so fast? I wasn’t a part of any of this. This is the teacher’s fault. He signed me up and put me on blast so that everyone could turn on me? What did I do? My mind ran 100 miles in a second but in that next second, I thought about Jesus. This is an opportunity of a lifetime!

I said, “Well I believe in Jesus so I’m gonna keep my thoughts to myself.”

It wasn’t a hard-hitting statement. Surely wasn’t a witty statement. I heard people vocalize their disappointment. A different Vet in the back actually said, “Whatever! Jesus don’t love you.”

“O yes he does!”, I said. “He most definitely does.”

Matthew 5:13 is very interesting. Jesus says we are the salt of the earth. What does that mean exactly? The answer is simple. We give the world flavor. I can just imagine, you the reader, like what is this guy talking about. Allow me the chance to explain. I learned this through the power of attraction.

” I lost my saltiness with her.”

There were two different woman that I had met working at a call center in Fayetteville, NC. The first one we’ll call Janet. She was in one of the newer classes, learning how to function and thrive as an agent on the floor. She came to my desk one day and started listening to my calls to learn how to do the job. As she sat there listening, something started to pull at me inside my spirit about her. In between calls we began to talk and she declared she had a relationship with Jesus Christ. That was exciting to say the least. On the third day of her coming to my desk, I told her there was something about her that I couldn’t figure out. She agreed at the the time that it seemed we were drawn to each other for a reason. We exchanged numbers and started to become friends. It didn’t take long but my physical feelings were beginning to manifest the want to connect with her.

The second woman, we’ll call Ashley, was gorgeous. In my mind, I knew to leave her alone. She was a flirt, and made it known that sex and orgies was her thing. It took some time but when she realized that I was not one to be seduced, she allowed me to see her more vulnerable side. It was like a subtle way of respecting my position in Christ. Her persistent insinuation that she was down to do whatever was annoying to say the least. The problem was that over time, her subtle advances was wearing me down. It was obvious, she felt a level of intrigue because her normal tactics wouldn’t work on me. Eventually I started to feel the tug in my spirit regarding her. That threw my mind into a tailspin. With Ashley, I was fighting not to connect with her physically because it would cause me to have to ignore my Faith in Jesus.

With both situations, I sought the Lord. I realized my particular set of circumstances were aligned in such a way for me to ask an earnest set of questions. Why do I feel attracted to both women? One says she loves the Lord and the other says she knows of him. One is down to be friends and the other is down for whatever. As I began to seek an answer to these questions a flaw of mine began to surface. My pursuit to figure out the pull in my spirit would cause me to want to connect in an illegitimate, physical way. Needless to say, I was perplexed.

The Lord revealed to me; the attraction was very real and something to pay attention to. However it’s not an attraction based on the physical. He said to me, “I want to use you to connect with her.” What a revelation! No wonder I messed this up so much. The feeling of attraction is an invitation to allow God to use you to reach another. When I recognized how important this revelation was, I tried to go back and fix things.

Eventually, I told Janet what God revealed to me and told her what God had laid on my heart. The problem was, she knew I was drawn to her. The only thing she could think about was “my attraction via the physical” and not the message. At that point, to her, I was like everybody else. I hurt my witness by prioritizing my physical feelings and not that of the Lord. In other words, I blended in with the world by ignoring the call to be a witness to let God speak into her life. I lost my saltiness with her. Matthew 5:13

What we don’t want to do as Christians is lose our ability to witness. We don’t want to miss the chance to allow God to use us to connect with someone through us. The same need to connect can happen with men and women, but we must stay Kingdom-Minded. Colossians 3:2 Ask God why he put a person on your mind. Spend some time praying and bringing this up to our Father in Heaven. We want to be as salty as possible with people. The goal is not to blend in and look the same.

If your actions, speech, and demeanor does not scream Jesus, I challenge you to let your light shine. Matthew 5:14-16.

Don’t be afraid to let your light shine and show the world, “I may be here, but I’m not doing what you guys do.” John 15:19.

Bring flavor to your house, your family, and your community. Lift everything to our Father through our King.
